Hi everyone! Welcome back to Beyond the Book, a branch of The Writer’s Mic, where I go beyond just reading a book and explore the story, characters, and what makes it worth your time. I’m your host, Betty Kruse, and today I’m talking about Heartless.
Heartless by Marissa Meyer is a fantasy novel about Catherine Pinkerton, a talented young woman who dreams of opening her own bakery. The story takes place in a magical kingdom inspired by the world of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. Instead of wanting to live the life of a noble at court, Catherine wants a simple future where she can bake desserts and run her own shop. However, her life becomes complicated when the King of Hearts decides he wants to marry her.
At the beginning of the book, Catherine is hopeful, creative, and excited about her dream of opening a bakery. This begins her character arc, which means the way a character changes throughout the story. Catherine wants to follow her passion for baking, but her family pressures her to marry the King of Hearts because it would bring power and honor to their family. Catherine feels trapped between doing what others expect and following what she truly wants.
An important part of Catherine’s story is her relationship with Jest, the mysterious court joker. Jest is kind, charming, and encourages Catherine to believe in her dreams. When they spend time together, Catherine feels happier and more confident about the future she wants. Their relationship adds romance to the story and helps readers understand Catherine’s feelings. However, as the plot continues, Catherine experiences betrayal, heartbreak, and loss. These painful events slowly change her personality. By the end of the book, readers can clearly see how these experiences lead Catherine to become the famous Queen of Hearts.
The plot arc of the story also makes the book interesting and emotional. At the beginning, the author introduces Catherine, the magical kingdom, and her dream of owning a bakery. The rising action begins when the King of Hearts starts to court Catherine and when she secretly spends time with Jest. This creates tension because Catherine must hide her feelings and deal with the expectations of the royal court. The climax of the story is very dramatic and emotional, when a tragic event changes Catherine’s life forever. The falling action shows how Catherine becomes more bitter and angry because of everything she has lost. The resolution connects the story to the Wonderland many readers already know and explains how Catherine becomes the Queen of Hearts.
The author, Marissa Meyer, is known for writing fantasy and science fiction books for young adults. She is also the author of The Lunar Chronicles series, which retells classic fairy tales in a futuristic setting. Meyer originally worked as an editor before becoming a full-time author, and her books are known for mixing familiar stories with new ideas. In Heartless, she takes a well-known character from Wonderland and creates a detailed backstory that explains how the Queen of Hearts might have become the person readers recognize.
Personally, I do not usually read romance novels. I usually read books in the same genre that I write in, so romance is not something I pick up very often. However, I decided to try Heartless because I really enjoy other books written by Marissa Meyer. I wanted to see how she would tell the story of the Queen of Hearts, and I was curious about her version of Wonderland.
In the end, I was really glad that I read this book. The story was emotional, creative, and very memorable. Even though the ending is sad, it makes the story powerful and helps explain why the Queen of Hearts becomes such a cruel character later on. Because of how much I enjoyed the story, the characters, and the writing, I rated this book 5 stars. In fact, it is the first book I have rated five stars this year. (Yes, I’m very harsh on rating books so this book did surprise me.)
Overall, Heartless is a beautifully written story about dreams, love, and how heartbreak can change someone. The strong character arc, the dramatic plot arc, and the creative connection to Wonderland make it a unique and unforgettable book.
Thanks for joining me on Beyond the Book. I’m Betty Kruse, and this was my review of the Heartless. Keep reading, keep exploring stories, and I’ll see you next time where we go beyond the book.
